Chapter Sixteen

Cress

Orion led me to a great big room that looked as if it’d been taken straight from a storybook. The nuns at the convent had kept a few books here and there, but nothing so grand as this. I released him as I stumbled forward, standing in the middle of the room with my head craned back as I just turned and turned.

“These are all yours?” I asked, mouth agape.

He chuckled, but before he could respond, the doors opened and Sorrell and Roan appeared. They’d been talking quietly, their heads tilted down towards each other as if they were sharing secrets, but as soon as they looked up and saw me, their words cut off. Wow, I thought, way to not hide the fact that they were talking about me. Who knew I could be so popular?

“You found her,” Sorrell said with a nod Orion’s way.

“Was I lost?” I asked. Other than the look of irritation he shot me, he didn’t respond to my question. Asshole.

“Where’s Groffet?” Orion asked.

“He’s doing his duties,” Roan said.

I pursed my lips, but despite the fact that Orion nodded in understanding, neither of them gave me anything—not a look, not an explanation of who this Groffet was or what duties he was doing. It was like I was invisible. Lovely.

I headed for the desk towards the back and center of the library, clambering up onto the platform, my skirts tangling around my legs as I hefted my much smaller frame onto the small stage. “Hasn’t anyone here heard of stairs?” I grumbled as I rolled and popped up to my feet.

Roan smirked as he strode forward without saying anything. He moved around the side of the platform. He waved his hand over a section of the floor and a set of small stairs leading up to the desk appeared—rising from the floor.

“Oh.” I blinked down at it dumbly. Well then ...

I scooted several stacks of books to the side and perched on the corner of the desk, folding my hands in my lap and adjusting myself so that all of my bits were covered before finally looking up and meeting their gazes. Sorrell looked as if he’d swallowed a particularly sour fruit. “Well,” I started, “let’s do this. Test me. Hit me with the magic. Wham. Bam. Magic me, man.”

Sorrell walked past Roan and with a twist of his hand in the air, he made a spiral of blue sparks appear. “Wait—” Orion held his hand out but it was too late. The blue sparks slammed into my chest, nearly knocking me off the desk.

I let out an oomph and sent a stack of books to the floor when I reached out and grabbed onto the edge of the desk, clutching it for all that I was worth as frost crept through my veins. A shiver skirted down my spine and when I breathed, cold clouds of air escaped from between my lips.

“I thought I said to wait!” Orion snapped as I managed to get myself under control.
